Four Worldbuilding tools I wish discovered sooner

Jun 7, 2026

When it comes to worldbuilding, everyone needs a great tool that works with their own brain. I know for me I couldn't settle for just one, much less just ANY tool. So I went and tried a bunch of tools, and here are four that I wish I had found at the beginning of my worldbuilding journey.

If you're just starting out in worldbuilding, this is the article for you. Here's my top four tools I wish I had found sooner.

1. Notion

I have not found a better platform for organizing all of your worldbuilding information that is as clean and simple to use as Notion is. The best part is that you can seamlessly connect all of your information. To get the best worldbuilding templates for Notion, head over to worldbuildingwares.com

2. Procreate

It’s a $10 app with advanced tools, and an unrivaled starting brush library. I would pick procreate as my go to software for drawing maps, concept art, and characters any day of the week!

3. A Longform Journal

I use a moleskin lined journal. Journaling every morning has been a game changer for me. It serves as a place to dump all of my thoughts, worries, and ramblings in my mind before my days starts. After that, I have more ideas and they come to me a lot easier. I also use this same journal to write out any longer content for my world that isn't fully fleshed out. This helps me see things in a first draft form without judging what I wrote.

4. A Pocket Journal

I use Field Notes in a custom leather portfolio I made. I’ve found that writing and sketching my ideas analog feels much more satisfying than writing them digitally, so I make sure to have my pocket journal be the first place my ideas go before they get inputted into my Notion workspace.

If you’re a creative, writer, author, or worldbuilder who wants to create work that changes our world, then stick around! I share tons of tips, systems, and more to help people in these spaces.

It's important to pick the tool or tools that best works for you. No system for creativity works the same for every person, so just stick to what feels right to you!
